Librarians’ Critical Role Serving Immigrant Communities

Librarians’ Critical Role Serving Immigrant Communities In-Person

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States. USCIS seeks to secure America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of the U.S. immigration system.

Join us for this workshop to learn first-hand from a USCIS Community Relations Officer about how librarians can play a critical role serving immigrant communities. The presenter will take you on a guided tour of resources provided by the USCIS for librarians to provide information to immigrants.  Learn about how you can set up a Citizenship Corner at your library with the USCIS Civics and Citizenship Toolkit.

Following this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Refer library patrons to authoritative information about citizenship and immigration and qualified immigration service providers.
  • Help immigrants avoid scams.
  • Explain the roles of the Department of Homeland Security Immigration Agencies.
  • Set up a Citizenship Corner at your library.

Presenter: John McCarthy, Region 1 USCIS Community Relations Officer

This workshop is aligned with the 2017-2019 MLS Strategic Plan goals of co-creator culture, social justice, and alignment with MBLC.

Join us for the morning workshop, too!  Librarians Fostering Civic Engagement. Register separately for both programs. We’ll break for an hour in between the morning and afternoon workshops.  Bring a bag lunch or enjoy lunch on your own.
