Basic Library Techniques: Cataloging In-Person
Session 1 covers cataloging in general, its history, and focuses on descriptive cataloging. It summarizes the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2nd ed. (AACR2) and RDA (Resource Description and Access) and integrates MARC21 format. It then proceeds to access points and name authority files.
Session 2 tackles subject headings and the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Hands-on cataloging exercises are used throughout. By the end of this interactive workshop, all participants will be able to complete a cataloging record with a classification number for a book, a DVD, and a music and/or spoken word CD according to current cataloging rules.
Both classes must be registered for and attended to receive credit for the class. Certificates will be handed out after Session 2.
We ask that participants bring their own lunch that does not have to be refrigerated. MLS-Northampton does have a microwave on-site. There are also some eating places right around the office location.
