CANCELED - Building Inclusive Collections: How to Create a More Diverse Library Collection

CANCELED - Building Inclusive Collections: How to Create a More Diverse Library Collection In-Person

Due to travel difficulties during the storm, this program has been canceled. If you are able to make it to the Friday, March 23rd session in Malden, please register here.

Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop famously wrote about the need for “windows” and “mirrors” in children’s literature to help children and teens both empathize with others and to see themselves in literature. Regardless of the demographics of a community, school and public libraries need to build diverse youth collections to support this social and emotional learning of the community’s youth.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels of youth services librarians and will explore the best practices for building and promoting inclusive collections, from identifying solid literature to incorporating diverse titles in displays and programs. Participants will hear from renowned voices in children’s literature, and will be exposed to movements such as We Need Diverse Books and #OwnVoices. Takeaways will include varied resources for finding books as well as concrete ways to identify problematic titles that may already exist in a library’s collection - and what to do about them.

After attending this workshop you will:

* Be able to list at least five resources for finding diverse and inclusive titles to add to your collection
* Create at least one goal for a future display or program that promotes inclusivity in your community
* Have a plan for addressing problematic titles in your collection
* Be able to express the rationale for your goal and plan to stakeholders in your community

This workshop is the second part of a two-part series on Building Inclusive Collections. Please consider registering for the morning session, "Building Inclusive Collections: Why Cultural Competence is Essential in Libraries".

This workshop supports the MLS Strategic Plan’s themes of Social Justice and Building a Strong MA Library Community.
