Developing the Youth Collection (ALA Webinar) Online
The Massachusetts Library System is pleased to announce that we have contracted with ALA to provide our members with access to their live webinars. These webinars are free to MLS members who register through our calendar. Please do not register directly with ALA. Description
In this webinar, you’ll learn the basics of collection development for kids and teens. Youth collection expert Julie Jurgens will cover the wide variety of formats available for these audiences and special considerations for curating and maintaining these collections. You'll also learn about how to prepare for and handle material challenges and how to make sure your collection development policy provides adequate support for these situations.
Learning Outcomes
After participating in this event, you will:
- Understand the fundamentals of curating and maintaining collections for youth and teens
- Have a list of resources to consult, including where to find reviews and other collection support tools.
- Feel empowered to advocate for materials for youth and teens
Presenter
Julie Jurgens has worked in libraries for over 16 years, and has worked with children and their families for over 20. In her current workplace she supervises collection development for children birth-6th grade, including ordering, weeding, and marketing. She's presented on outreach, readers advisory, and youth programming at a variety of local, national, and international venues. Learn more about her work at himissjulie.com
