Cultural Competence: A Collection Development Conversation In-Person

Diversity and inclusiveness are important in the current discussion of selecting materials. “Windows and Doors,” multilingual collections, #ownvoices, and representation all come into play as a part of modern collection development and maintenance. Is your collection diverse? Do you need materials in different languages for your community? What are libraries doing with classic literature that is now considered “problematic”? What do you do with diverse titles that aren’t circulating in your library? This workshop will be seeded with a couple of pre-selected topics, including diversity audits and international language collections, but will be focused on participant-led discussion and ideas. A short questionnaire will be sent prior to attendance.

Outcomes:

  • Appraise collections for diversity and inclusion
  • Arrange a toolkit of resources for building diverse collections
  • Identify and design culturally competent services to highlight your collect
