The Massachusetts Library System is pleased to announce that we have partnered with ALA Publishing to provide opportunities to learn library management skills from leaders in the field. This series is free for Massachusetts library workers, sponsored by a grant from the Manton Foundation. While information is scaled to smaller public libraries, all Massachusetts library staff and volunteers, in any type of library, are welcome to register.

For small and rural librarians, the challenges of security are daunting. When the library has a small staff, is physically distant from law enforcement and first responders, keeping things safe requires implementing the right security procedures, policies, and devices.

For nearly two decades, Dr. Steve Albrecht, a 15-year police veteran, has presented workshops around the country for libraries of all sizes serving many different communities on dealing with challenging patrons and handling security incidents. In this event, he’ll discuss the issues unique to you and your colleagues if you work in a one-person or small library location in a rural community.

After participating in this event, you will be able to:
• Use a combination of security devices, including cameras, a panic button, or an alarm system to make your facility safer.
• Create protocols with local law enforcement, other first-responders, and other nearby business to check on single-person libraries.
• Develop intuitive responses to security situations involving potentially problematic patrons when working alone or with a small staff.
• Make your case for more security solutions to library leaders and elected officials.
