VIRTUAL NE RA Round Table

The Northeastern Readers' Advisory Round Table studies Science Fiction Arc#3: Military Adventure & Space Opera.

(Note: This is a Virtual Meeting sponsored by the Newburyport Public Library. Members will recieve a link to sign-up via our Google Group, anyone else who is interested should email Leane at rapotential@gmail.com)

Everyone reads the benchmark: Everyone reads either/or both of the benchmarks: John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War (2005) AND/OR Axie Oh’s Rebel Soul (2017) as a Diversity title.

Over the first three meetings in 2020 we are studying Science Fiction. The list of books and the notes on what we learn in our discussions will be found on our blog. We discussed Hard Science Fiction in January and CliFy (Climate Science Fiction) in May.

Please also read a Choice title in Science Fiction: Military Adventure & Space Opera--look on the RA RT Blog for a list of suggested titles and some supporting materials.

Appeal to be read for November meeting: Focus on all the appeal factors, but really think about frame, tone, and plot.

Meeting every other month, the NE RA RT reads from one genre--and then discusses the appeal of that genre with each other emphasizing the building of a skill set of appeal categories and familiarity of genre particulars. They cover a different genre every meeting, allowing each of the participants to be introduced to the discipline of reading for appeal, as well as an initiation to broad genre categories. Everyone participating will be able to share analysis of titles and authors in unfamiliar genres that will stretch their capacity as readers' advisors. The discussion leader is Leane Ellis (rapotential@gmail.com).
