Readers' Advisory Roundtable - West, Genre Study Of Nonfiction in Graphic Novel Format In-Person
Join the Reader’s Advisory Round Table of Western MA (RART-W) genre study of nonfiction in the graphic novel format. Our benchmark title is Gender Queer. Maia Kobabe, uses e/em/eir pronouns. Gender Queer is Maia's intensely cathartic autobiography. E charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes and grappling with how to come out to family and society. The project/memoir started as a way to explain to eir family what it means to be nonbinary and asexual. A multiple award winner, Gender Queer is a useful and touching guide on gender identity.
RART-W meets bimonthly to explore various genres and how to use them to meet the reading needs of our users. In the between months, we share what we are reading/viewing/listening to in our book chat discussions. This month's meeting is the middle of a graphic novel arc.
In this year’s genre study, we are continuing to meet via jitsi to learn about the appeal of particular genres, the readers who may enjoy them, and ways to incorporate appropriate genre titles and authors into our readers’ advisory services. We select a benchmark title that we all read, and then each of us reads a second of the genre as our personal selection. We discuss and compare the titles and their characteristics. We also find items of alternate media in the same general area using our whole collections as a resource
For questions or suggestions, contact Jan Resnick (njrezz@comcast.net) or Alene Moroni (amoroni@forbeslibrary.org).
Join us for conversation, edification, and an opportunity to share reading/viewing/listening opportunities.
