Readers' Advisory Roundtable - West, Genre Study: Manga

Readers' Advisory Roundtable - West, Genre Study: Manga In-Person

Join the Reader’s Advisory Round Table of Western MA (RART-W) genre study of manga.  Our benchmark title is My Brother's HusbandWhen a burley Canadian arrives at Yaichi's door and announces he is the widowed husband of Yaichi's late gay twin. Yaichi and his young daughter confront Japan's attitudes to LGBT issues and their own in very different ways.  The twins have been estranged since Ryoji came out and emigrated.  This is a sensitive exploration of  the issues families face and a possible starting point for their discussions.

RART-W meets monthly to explore various reading genres and how to use them to meet the reading needs of our users. We often alternate genre study with chat sessions sharing what we are reading/viewing/listening to in our explorations.

In this year’s genre study, we are continuing to meet via jitsi to learn about the appeal of particular genres, the readers who may enjoy them, and ways to incorporate appropriate genre titles and authors into our readers’ advisory services.  We select a benchmark title that we all read, and then each of us reads a second of the genre as our personal selection.  We discuss and compare the titles and their characteristics. We also find items of alternate media in the same general area using our whole collections as a resource.

For questions or suggestions, contact Jan Resnick (njrezz@comcast.net) or Alene Moroni (amoroni@forbeslibrary.org).

Join us for conversation, edification, and an opportunity to share reading/viewing/listening opportunities with colleagues and friends.
