Accidental Reference Librarian Online
Were you thrown into reference? Or have you been doing it for so long that you’ve lost interest? Accidental Reference Librarian is appropriate for new and experienced library staff working reference services in school, public, academic and special libraries.
In this interactive workshop, we will
- review a practical approach to the basics of reference services
- explore best practices in
- evaluating reference sources
- conducting reference interviews
- assessing how to address patron information needs
- building reference evaluation into your daily routine
- try out a recommended search strategy in small groups
What you’ll leave with:
- renewed appreciation of reference work
- boost your confidence
- continue demonstrating emotional intelligence towards patrons *job*aids to keep you on track
Learning outcomes: After the session, you will be able to:
- Identify the 5 steps of a professionally conducted reference interaction
- Apply a recommended framework to reference source evaluation
- Draft a search strategy in response to a reference inquiry
