Making Your Library Website More Accessible (ALA Webinar)

Making Your Library Website More Accessible (ALA Webinar) Online

The Massachusetts Library System is pleased to announce that we have contracted with ALA to provide our members with access to their live webinars.  These webinars are free to MLS members who register through our calendar.  Please do not register directly with ALA. Members who register directly with ALA are responsible for paying their registration fee.

Please help us keep MLS sponsored training free for all members. If you are unable to attend the live webinar, please cancel your registration. A cancellation link can be found in your confirmation email, or you may contact Sarah Donnelly at sdonnelly@masslibsystem.org to cancel.

Description

If you aren’t thinking about your site’s accessibility, you should be. Web Accessibility is not just a trend—more and more it is a legal requirement. In this webinar, library website expert Laura Solomon will take you through the principles of Web Accessibility, the library’s obligations around this issue, and best practices for implementing changes.

Learning Outcomes

By participating in this session, you will:

  • Learn the fundamental concepts of web accessibility
  • Understand the first steps you can take to evaluate your site for accessibility issues
  • Learn about common accessibility pitfalls
  • Learn changes that don’t require extensive training or programming knowledge

Presenter

Laura Solomon, MCIW, MLS is the Library Services Manager for the Ohio Public Library Information Network and a W3C-certified front-end web developer.  She has been doing web development and design for more than twenty years, in both public libraries and as an independent consultant. She specializes in developing with Drupal. She is a 2010 Library Journal Mover & Shaker. She’s written three books about social media and content marketing, specifically for libraries, and speaks nationally on both these and technology-related topics.  As a former children’s librarian, she enjoys bringing the “fun of technology” to audiences and in giving libraries the tools they need to better serve the virtual customer.
